It is a shame. Mr. Trump had shown real courage, resilience and determination during the vitriolic campaign organized against him. That alone had given hope to millions that someone was finally strong and determined enough to halt the endless conflicts decimating the nation and their lives. This courage was short-lived.
Less than 100 days in office, he unilaterally and illegally launched a missile strike on the sovereign state of Syria based on the false accusations that President Al-Assad had again 'gassed his own people' as the usual and redundant excuse goes. The world heard it before when such demonization of Iraq's Saddam Hussein and Libya's Muammar Gaddafi paved the way for the long-planned utter destruction of these secular Muslim nations.
This was preceded by an equally illegal US attack in Yemen. A few days later, a Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (GBU-43/B) was experimentally exploded in the already US-ravaged Afghanistan. Then, 101st Airborne Division troops were sent to Somalia the following day.
Having successfully exposed Establishment hypocrisy and widespread journalistic fakery, Donald Trump could not resist jumping into that putrid well himself with this brutal about-face. It is hardly innovative. To be elected on the promise to end ruinous military expeditions while increasing them once in office has become a staple of US electoral politics.
Having demonstrated he was an obvious part of the military machine, more and expanded foreign conflicts can be expected regardless of the exorbitant costs, financial and otherwise.
The martial show was wildly applauded by rabid archenemies John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Hillary Clinton who suddenly turned noisy Cheerleaders-for-Trump. The propaganda machine known as the mainstream 'free media' howled in giddy happiness. Mr. Trump had thus turned himself into the war criminal his several White House predecessors were and remain. Like them he now has blood on his hands.
Making a nation great is a noble aspiration hardly unique to America. It is what most decent leaders want as do the two great statesmen of the day: President Xi of China and President Putin of Russia. Both are making their own nation 'great' and strong without impulsively slaughtering millions and ruining large swaths of the planet as economic policy, all while taking care of their own population. Both oversee a spectacular, inspiring and world-admired national rebirth. This is what the American people wanted and why they voted for Mr. Trump.
The American tragedy thus continues to unfold with no end in sight.
