US Secretary of States Mike Pompeo launched a vicious and rageful anti-China campaign based on a bizarre dossier of undocumented 'enormous evidence' showing, he said, that COVID-19 did originate in China which made the Chinese government fully responsible, a position he recently backed away from. This 'enormous evidence' would justify the billions and even trillions of US dollars eventually wrestled from Beijing as 'punishment'.
Not to be undone, a handful of Western 'allies' happily jumped on the Secretary's noisy geopolitical bandwagon.
The violence of his smears, slurs, falsehoods and accusations is a stark reminder of a similar process on the road to the Iraq War. Who can ever forget the non-existing Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), the fake 'incubator babies' or General Powell's sterling UN anthrax performance?
The accusatory violence unleashed an ongoing anti-Asian racist wave in the US and abroad, especially that of an anti-Chinese nature. Scores of "Asian-looking' individuals, their families and businesses as well as foreign students, have since been under hateful attacks whether verbal or physical.
Recent international scientific studies indicate however that COVID-19 probably circulated undetected in the West much earlier than first identified in Wuhan. In fact, many physicians were aware of an unusual and severe lung disease which eluded identification. It is not known if the WHO was then advised.
The studies also show that various European and Canadian COVID-19 strains have no relation to the Chinese type and that the deadly virus may even have originated in the US where Biolab facilities operate.
Regardless of an origin that may never be found or revealed, Asian nations, especially China, have demonstrated superior methodology in fighting the epidemic, whereby saving the life of millions.
President Xi repeatedly and tirelessly urged, early on, full global cooperation and cohesion to control the fast developing pandemic. This is what should have been done.
Instead, ancient US Cold War reflexes reactivated long-dead fantasies of Communist takeover plots. Xi's initiative was ignored in spite of the human devastation underway, in near indifference to the tens of thousands lives lost in Europe and North America, areas totaling 85% of the total COVID-19 victims to date.
In trying to blacken China in the eyes of the world, her people and her dignified Leadership, the Trump administration did not divert the world's attention but rather shone a harsh light upon an American population weakened by glaring inefficiencies and dysfunctions of all sorts.
The rabid, hysterical, demonization of China has led many observers to conclude that in highlighting the 'Chinese virus' tree with such force, the Secretary wanted to hide an American forest of corporate greed and political disorganization. It failed.
The Dulles NOW Executive Committee therefore calls on Mr. Pompeo to immediately step down and for a return to the saner diplomatic relations
characteristic of great nations.
