Dulles NOW endorsed and promoted the candidacy of President-elect Bush because we believed that the first urgent task was to return honor, integrity and dignity to the nation.
During the Clinton-Gore years, the attorney general overlooked the laws in the face of a long list of blatant violations, from campaign finance abuses to national security matters to violence against women. Instead of delivering justice, the non-enforcement of these laws was used as a political weapon against opponents or to protect embattled allies. As an example of the harm done to women and girls, this judicial laxity resulted in an explosion of the trafficking in women and children, a shameful 4% rate of rape conviction, the introduction of pornography in public libraries, the banality of partial-birth abortion infanticide and the cheering of sexual harassment in high office.
President-elect Bush has said he wanted to unite a people divided by eight years of pervasive lying, character assassinations and perceptions of entrenched widespread corruption. The nomination of Senator Ashcroft, an esteemed and highly qualified public official of great integrity, is one more step in that direction. It is the best indication that our system of laws and justice will be respected again.
We urge the U.S. Senate to promptly confirm Senator Ashcroft as the next Attorney General of the United States. |
