The public declarations Alec Baldwin made on television to "stone Henry Hyde to death" and to "kill" the "wives and children" of the members of Congress who may vote for impeachment were profoundly shocking to the dissident Dulles Area Chapter of NOW.
Our members found nothing amusing in his choice of words we strongly denounce as sickening and intolerable as they are the ultimate forms of hate speech. NOW has long condemned as dangerous to women and children such verbal calls for violence we know from experience often results in assault and battery and even death.
The Judiciary Committee established that violations of the constitutional rule of law born from a sexual harassment suit warranted the verdict of the House of Representatives. Within this context, Mr. Baldwin's words are offensively sexist. We are greatly disappointed to find such contempt for the equality laws that protect women in an otherwise fine actor known for his dedication to animals right. |
