The 2006 great cash-and-carry dog-and-pony show otherwise known as free and fair US elections is upon
us again. The politically powerless citizenry is once more cordially invited to participate in the redundant but well-rehearsed farce as widespread fraud is expected on both sides.
A large majority of Americans is reportedly 'fed up' and 'disgusted' with the current, abysmal, state of affairs and expects major changes if the Democrats regain control of the House and Senate. This wishful-thinking should not blind potential voters to the realities of the past years whereby both parties stood, and continue to stand, shoulder to shoulder in support of:
- the illegal and criminal destruction of Iraq aimed to embezzle her natural resources.
- the killing of Article 1, Section 9, of the Constitution dealing with habeas corpus, the heart of our Constitution and Bill of Rights and a bedrock right dating back to 1215 and the Magna Carta. The Military Commission Act legalized in effect the kidnapping, holding and torturing of US citizens and foreign nationals in secret prisons. It also authorizes the use of 'evidence' obtained under torture against those the US wish to put to death. Democrats and Republicans thus ended our constitutional republic when they supported the sordid bill George Bush proudly signed last October 17.
With few exceptions, both Democrats and Republicans endorse the spying upon any US citizen, anywhere, anytime and for any or no reason. Both support another looming illegal war, against Iran this time, and the use of nuclear weapons. Both happily paddle in a Congress Americans dub a 'cesspool' of corruption, sleaze, sex scandals and vulgarity not much different from what the nation was forced to endure in the Clinton years. Both publicly exhibit deeply entrenched racist impulses and a most primitive religious intolerance. Both display ignorance of world affairs. Both have demonstrated inconceivable incompetence. Both hold the American people in contempt and both have deeply shamed and weakened our nation's standing in the world.
Regardless of outcome, the slaughter in Iraq will continue and probably increase. Innocent American and Iraqi lives will not be spared. Congress will not shower. A thuggish White House will continue to operate in the only manner it knows, freer than before to act with characteristic violent irrationality now than nothing or no one will stand in the way for the next two years.
What is, therefore, a potential voter to do? Those who feel the need to express their discontent and repulsion next Tuesday need to remember that their vote will not change much because nothing can change unless the one-party system is dismantled. A real democratic system must be founded to allow the emergence of truer representatives of the people. Given the lack of meaningful choices, the only 'victory' for voters next week is to deny politicians the only prize for which any of them will do anything: to retain power at any cost.
Others will do what most Dulles NOW activists will do and not vote. Those who will bother to go to the polls should therefore 'Dump, Dump Them All'. Get rid, with no second thought, of all incumbents whether Republicans or Democrats, men or women.
Besides, it could be fun.
