Dulles NOW activists have joined "Indict Sharon", the international campaign for justice for the victims of the 1982 Sabra and Shatila Lebanese refugee camps massacres.
Twenty three survivors of the carnage have charged Israel's current prime minister Ariel Sharon and other Israelis and Lebanese with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The charges were brought on June 18, 2001 in Belgian Courts.
As General of the invading Israeli Defense Forces, then defense minister Sharon was in complete control of Beirut, Lebanon, when the Israeli military ringed and sealed the two overcrowded camps in order to "cleanse" them of the "terrorists" Sharon said were there.
Hundreds of civilians were tortured, women were raped, children and old people shot, the wounded left to die while trucks carried hundreds away, never to be seen again. Over 2,000 Lebanese and Palestinian civilians were thus slaughtered or disappeared. The legal, military and decision-making responsibility rested with Sharon under established and recognized principles of International Law. In 1983, an internal Israeli investigation found him indirectly but "personally" responsible for the killings. He was forced to resign.
We urge our followers to join the campaign to indict war criminal Ariel Sharon.
