I wrote some months ago that though horrible things were happening in
Kosovo we would not know the scale of these offences until the region was
opened up for inspection. I dare say all will recall the media's gruesome
tales of genocide, of mass graves and of torture chambers littered
throughout the country. This was part of the Clinton media campaign to
paint the war against Serbia as a moral crusade, the only way of saving a
whole people from calculated destruction — and maybe Clinton from
political oblivion. Allusions to the holocaust pervaded hundreds of
columns, editorials and so-called news reports; the parallels they drew
with Nazi Germany were vivid and deliberate.
Now that it is all over — at least for the moment — the facts can be
dispassionately and honestly examined. And what do we find? There was no
plan of mass extermination, no attempt at mass extermination and the
countryside had not been dotted with well-equipped government torture
chambers manned by scores of sadistic Serbs.
This is not to deny horrible things did not happen. Lining anyone up
against a wall and shooting him just because he differs from you either
politically, culturally, racially, or what, is a horrible thing indeed.
But what we are looking at is the scale and it is this that the
mainstream media lied about — willingly and with premeditation. The same
left-wing journalistic mindset that did all it could to conceal Hanoi's
policy of systematic atrocities against the South turned its energies to
justifying Clinton's war. But why? Because the mass of Western left-wing
journalists saw it as a means to punish Milosevic for his politics, not
for his crimes. These are the very same people who cheered Pinochet's
illegal arrest but just cheered and cheered Castro.
What is the response of these journalists to independent observers like
Perez Pujola, a Spanish forensic surgeon, who estimated that the civilian
death toll might be less than 2,500? Very little so far, and it will
remain that way. Pujola's estimate is not to be lightly taken. He had
been sent by the International Tribunal to investigate alleged Serb war
crimes. Try as hard as they could, he and his specialists could not find
one mass grave. He concluded that mass graves were a product of a "war
propaganda machine." This is an important point. It struck me that the
more stubborn the Serbs became the more hysterical and wild became the
accusations of Serbian atrocities. (None of this should suggest that
those responsible for committing murders should not pay the price; only
that it should not take a war to do it. Justice frequently involves
costs.)
Perez Pujola team was just one of many teams, including one from the FBI,
of forensic experts sent by 15 or so countries to determine the number of
massacres. As these teams worked, largely unreported by the media, the
body count just fell and fell with one rumored massacre after another
being debunked in the process. In the meantime the KLA has been engaging
in its own brand of 'ethnic cleansing' with only segments of the foreign
media reporting it. As expected, America's so-called free press has
largely ignored the KLA's activities.
So where does this leave the third-way advocates in Washington and London
who claimed that thousands of Kosovians were murdered in scores of
massacres? Completely untouched, especially Clinton. What else can we
expect when 89 per cent of Washington's journalists voted for him? When
the news networks, with the exception of FNN, are run by his buddies;
when the owners of the New York Times and its ilk think it's their duty
to protect him and when even Hollywood defends him.
There is a moral pit and Clinton and his media supporters are wallowing
in it. It reeks of pathological lying, contempt for the truth and the
public, hypocrisy, deceit and monumental vanity. Its occupants despise
traditional values, especially patriotism, and loath the military. It
detests all those things that made America great and feared by tyrants.
And this is why it is so disgustingly cavalier with the lives of
America's fighting men and women.
Now divine providence has supplied liberty with the Net. This miracle in
communications will, I believe, eventually destroy the Left's virtual
control over the flow of information. When that happens the truth will
win out. |
