Rick Lazio: A Candidate We Can Support FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dulles NOW Chapter May 31, 2000
Like millions of Americans nationwide, Dulles NOW activists have been repeatedly urged by Mrs. Clinton's Campaign to actively participate in the New York Senate race and support her. After thoughtful nonpartisan deliberations, we decided to endorse Mayor Rudy Giuliani , her likely opponent at the time, because of his remarkable record of accomplishments.
Paying special attention to Congressman Rick Lazio's eight years in Congress, we found a results-oriented mainstream politician involved in many and varied issues. Of particular interest to women are his Medicaid plan for the disabled, his approach to health-related matters and breast cancer in particular, his fiscal responsibility, his demonstrated commitment to the enforcement of existing laws and his ability to unite people from different walks of life.
His position on partial-birth abortion is sound. Scientific facts leave no doubt that the procedure is the equivalent of infanticide, a conclusion that can no longer be dismissed as political or religious doctrine. Staunchly pro-choice, Dulles NOW believes partial-birth interventions ought to be severely restricted in the courts, a view shared by the majority of Americans, the majority of pro-choice women and the majority of NOW members.
Now that his candidacy has been formally announced, we are very pleased to endorse Representative Lazio for the United States Senate.
While this page was under construction, a stunning combination of personal tragedies descended upon New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, the likely Republican candidate we had endorsed for the U.S. Senate next November. On May 19th, Mr. Giuliani officially withdrew from a race he never officially entered. Dulles NOW wishes him and his family the very best. He would have made a splendid Senator. |
