Dulles NOW activists reached their unanimous decision after examining Mr. Earley's record of public service. The list of his accomplishments is indeed long and distinguished.
It is in sharp contrast with the lack of record of his Democratic opponent, a politician who reminds us of the opportunistic posturing Mr. Clinton adopted as public policy and of the catastrophic results it produced. Whether on taxes, crime or education, the Democratic candidate seems to waver constantly, unable to project a coherent vision for Virginia beyond that of his own personal ambition.
Mr. Earley's positions on major issues are strong and sound. His "no tax increase" pledge is the proper response to the current economic tensions. His support for the competency testing of new teachers is the right approach to ensure that our children will continue to receive the quality of education Virginia is known for. His tenure as Attorney General overwhelmingly favors him for the fight against terrorism. His work with Governor Allen to expand rehabilitation programs and to revamp the deficient parole and juvenile justice systems has done much to reduce crime. His talents to reach out and build coalitions have been openly recognized and even applauded by the General Assembly Democrats.
There is no question in our minds that the kind of leadership needed is best left in the competent and experienced hands of Mark Earley, a strong candidate for a strong Virginia. Dulles NOW activists are therefore pleased to endorse him for governor.
